Teslina street, once named Nikolićeva street after doctor Vladimir Nikolić, County President of Modruš-Rijeka County and Hungarian baron. The name of the street was changed in 1952 in honour of the great inventor and scientist in the field of alternating current, Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla Street is located at a popular site in close vicinity of today’s city square, Ban Jelačić Square, and park Zrinjevac.
It is not a big street, but its content makes it give the impression of one of the most important streets in the city of Zagreb. With his name, Nikola Tesla has not only sealed the name of this street, but also the complete Croatian history, with his inventions and innovations that changed the world. On 7 July 2006, the statue of Nikola Tesla was placed at the corner of Masarykova and Preradovićeva street. The statue is the work of art by Ivan Meštrović and it was moved to this location from the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb.
A big part of the street was turned into a pedestrian zone in 2012, so that the caterers can build terraces on one side of the street. Such a location, as well as a wide offer, attract many tourists. Old buildings and the whole architecture in general give a romantic touch to the whole street, while the mesh of new and modern bars make it unique and recognisable. With such an approach, Teslina street has continued its development as one of the most attractive gastronomic locations in Zagreb where an array of interesting restaurants are accompanied by innovative bars and cafés.
Clothes and shoe shops, mostly of high fashion brands, as well as restaurants, cafés, book stores, pharmacies, galleries, travel agencies, etc. are all located in Teslina street. Everything a resident needs can be found in one place. The street is always full of passengers, and it is interesting that almost none of those people live there. People in Teslina street are just passers-by, they are in a hurry. Apart from business suits and ties, you can find curious tourists there trying to record every step or two with their cameras, while their languages echo and get lost among numerous steps in a hurry. Apartments with a view on the street are not intended for long-term tenants. They are rented to foreigners because they reach record high prices due to their desirous location in the city. It is only behind the massive doors that lead to buildings’ backyards that we can find an occasional tenant of Teslina street hiding from the hectic routine.
